Choose a Size

If you are new to Cornhole, then you probably noticed that there are two different board sizes available. What’s the difference?

  • Tailgate Size. These Cornhole boards always measure 3 feet by 2 feet and are intended for recreational use. They are lighter, making it easier to move them, and they usually cost less than regulation size boards do.
  • Regulation Size. For official Cornhole gameplay, opt for a regulation size set of boards that measure 4 feet by 2 feet.

The American Cornhole Organization (ACO) states in their official rules that boards must measure between 47.5 inches to 48 inches long by 23.5 inches to 24 inches wide.

Consider the Material

Official boards must be made of hardwood plywood; the minimum thickness of the surface of the board is ½-inch with a cross-section backing or – if there is no cross-section backing – is ¾-inch thick (according to the ACO rules).

The problem with wood boards is that they can be rather heavy, so if you want something a little lighter that you can store easily, opt for boards that have an aluminum frame.

What About Colors, Lights, and Patterns?

Serious cornhole boards are not equipped with busy patterns and lights. These things can only distract players who are trying to concentrate and win a game or tournament.

For recreational use, you can take your pick! From a football field themed board like number 8 in our list or something beer-inspired like number 10, themed boards can make the game a little more fun at a party.

Night games are much more fun with boards like the GoSports Aluminum Frame Cornhole Set.

Top 3 Best Cornhole Boards Reviews

1. Slick Woody’s Burnt Wood Cornhole Set

Slick Woody’s makes some of best Cornhole boards for players with tournament intentions.

These regulation sized Cornhole boards are made with cabinet-grade birch wood tops and poplar frames, and they meet all standards set by the American Cornhole Association (different from the American Cornhole Organization).

They have handy cutouts on the side to make it easy to transport and carry the boards, and they also come with eight corn-filled bags so that you are ready to play right out of the box.

Due to the cost of these boards, we wouldn’t recommend them for occasional party use at the family BBQ, but if you are serious about improving your technique and need to practice on a board that has official Cornhole approval, it is a solid investment.

2. GoSports Solid Wood Premium Cornhole Set

Take your pick with GoSport’s Solid Wood Cornhole Set. They offer both the tailgate size (less expensive and lighter) and the regulation size if you want something official.

We like that these boards have no patterns, designs, decals or anything else painted on that will distract from the toss. You can also customize them if you like, which is nice if you don’t like any of the patterns that manufacturers choose to print on their boards.

They don’t list what kind of wood was used, but the boards are solid wood, and you can apply sealants or paint them to customize the design.

This is a handy set that comes with eight bags and even a carrying case to make transportation a lot smoother. If you’re headed to the park, the beach or a friend’s backyard, just pack up your Cornhole boards and set everything up on location.

3. GoSports CornHole Bean Bag Toss Game Set

For recreational use, we find GoSport’s Aluminum Frame Cornhole Set to be one of the best.

It is so much lighter compared to the wooden boards, and you will love the LED light ring around the hole. It makes playing in the dark a lot of fun, especially when you’re camping or at a backyard BBQ that is heading into the wee hours of the morning.

While we do like the boards and felt that the quality was up to par, the surface is much more slippery than the wooden boards. Wood provides you with better grip, but on the other hand, the slippery surface does add to the level of difficulty. If you learn to play on it, you might develop a unique technique!

Please remember that these Cornhole boards are not meant to be left outdoors in the elements. Only the frame is made of aluminum, while the face of the board is made of soft material covered in a plastic decal material. If you leave it out in the rain, you will ruin it.

Different patterns are available, and not all of them have the light ring. We suggest the lighted version if you’re looking for something fun and original to play at night!
